Rename shipping methods at checkout in WooCommerce
"Flat rate" means little to a customer. "Courier, 2-3 days" says what they get. Renaming a shipping method is easy for everyone at once, and harder for some customers only.
Rename a method for everyone
- Go to
WooCommerce > Settings > Shippingand open a shipping zone. - Click the method (for example Flat rate) to edit it.
- Change the
Titlefield and save.
The new name shows at checkout and in the order. Payment methods work the same way: under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, open the method and change its title.
Why not rename it for just some customers?
The title is one setting per method, so every customer sees it. There are cases where you want two names for the same method:
- "Trade delivery, 2-3 days" for wholesale accounts and "Standard delivery" for everyone else.
- A different name for a different country, such as a local courier's name.
The common workaround is to add a second method in the same zone and hide one of them, which gets messy quickly. The other is a code snippet on the shipping rates filter.
Renaming per customer with Tadrik Checkout Rules
This is a Checkout Rules Pro feature ($49/year, 14-day trial without a card). Renaming shipping methods needs Pro; choosing which methods a customer sees is free.
Tadrik Checkout Rules can rename shipping methods (Pro) for the customers you choose. Under WooCommerce > Checkout Rules, you write the rule as a sentence:
Conditions you can use include customer role (guests included), country or state, postcode (Pro), cart total, products and categories, and coupons.
Check it before customers see it
On the Test a cart tab, pick a customer, an address and some products. The plugin lists the methods that customer would be offered and shows which rule applied. You can switch a rule off at any time.
Keep it safe
- If anything goes wrong inside the plugin, checkout works as if the plugin were not there.
- It works with the block checkout and the classic one, and updates when the customer changes address or shipping method.
- Rename for clarity, not to change what a method does: the cost and rules of the method stay the same.
Common questions
Does renaming change the shipping cost? No. The cost, the zone and the tax settings belong to the method. Only the label the customer reads changes.
Will old orders change? Orders already placed keep the name they were placed with. A rule only affects checkouts that happen while it is on.
Can I rename payment methods too? For everyone, yes, in the Payments settings as above. For some customers only, use the same kind of rule: Tadrik Checkout Rules is built around choosing which payment and shipping methods each customer sees.
What should I write in the name? Say what the customer gets: the carrier or speed, not an internal label. "Trade delivery, 2-3 days" beats "Flat rate 2".
